Chrome-free & vegetable-tanned – why it makes a difference
When buying a high-quality leather bag, people often focus on its shape, color, and finish. However, a crucial aspect often remains unseen: how was the leather actually tanned? Yet, this makes a big difference – for the leather itself, for its longevity, and also for how it feels to the touch.
For our bags, we exclusively use chrome-free and purely vegetable-tanned organic cowhide. Instead of chromium or other chemical tanning agents, natural tannins derived from bark, leaves, or seeds are used. This traditional process takes more time but preserves the natural character of the leather. The result is leather that is alive – with a warm radiance, a pleasant feel, and a surface that becomes more beautiful with age.
As chrome is completely omitted during the tanning process, vegetable-tanned leather is particularly comfortable on the skin. Especially for bags that are carried daily and often have direct contact with hands or clothing, many people find natural leather particularly pleasant.
